How to teach the construction of sentences and paragraphs

Students should be taught the art of constructing good sentences and paragraphs. This can be enhanced by the following exercises:

Tip #1. Unscramble the sentence

This is a great activity to practice the correct order of the words in the English sentences. I distribute the fragments of the sentences to the students and their task is to put them into the correct order to form a sentence. The older the students, the smaller fragments should be.

Tip #2. Modelling the paragraph

Everyone knows that it is much easier to write following a certain model than to produce their own piece of writing. The fifth graders, while learning some basic information on how to introduce themselves, are asked to write a paragraph following the model in the previous exercise. This activity teaches the students how to construct a good sentence.
