How to teach punctuation

Punctuation is a very useful skill to master. Although nowadays most of us communicate via electronic messages where punctuation is not very important (most of us have seen how kids write instant messages to their friends), we still may need to send some official correspondence via emails and in such cases the recepient won't be impressed by our lack of punctuation marks.

This means that teaching punctuation is a must in our writing lessons.

Tip #1. Punctuate a short fragment of text

This exercise proves useful with the secondary school kids. I distribute small fragments of text without capital letters, full stops, commas, etc and their task is to rewrite this fragment using the correct punctuation.

Tip #2. Explain the role of each punctuation mark in the sentence

High school students are more aware of the importance of the punctuation in their writing thanks to the Ukrainian lessons and in my opinion a good task for them will be to explain the role of each punctuation mark in the sentence.
